University of Pretoria Internship 2024: Earn R10,000/Month

For 2024, the Faculty of Veterinary Science is offering an exciting internship opportunity for qualified Animal Health Technicians, Animal Scientists, or Agricultural Economists. This one-year, structured, non-degree program is designed to provide advanced experience in livestock health and production aspects, particularly for community members in the program’s vicinity.

Internship Details

Position Title: Veterinary Science Intern
Location: Ottosdal, Potchefstroom, Sekhukhune/Mashishing
Duration: 1 year
Stipend: R10,000 per month

About the Internship:

By joining the University of Pretoria’s intern program, you will work alongside a highly skilled team at the forefront of veterinary medicine and extension, especially focused on small-scale farmer development. This is an excellent opportunity to enhance your knowledge and skills in livestock health and production aspects.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide support to the qualified veterinarian during the training of small-scale farmers in the Ottosdal, Potchefstroom, or Sekhukhune/Mashishing areas.
  • Offer technical veterinary-related support to the trained farmers in these identified areas.
  • Collect and capture appropriate data, and participate in its analysis.
  • Liaise with local government officials (Animal Health Technicians, State Veterinarians, Extension Officers, Auctioneers, and other industry members) on animal health and production aspects.
  • Participate in an intern mentorship program and enter into a performance agreement.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Diploma/BSc in Animal Health, Animal Science, or Agricultural Economics.
  • Acknowledged technical expertise.
  • Adequate subject knowledge necessary for the post.
  • Must be a resident of one of the identified villages in Ottosdal, Potchefstroom, or Sekhukhune/Mashishing.

Required Competencies (Skills, Knowledge, and Behavioral Attributes):

  • Proficiency in local language and communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Good computer skills (Windows, MS Office, internet).
  • Availability after hours.

Added Advantages and Preferences:

  • Registration as an Animal Health Technician with the SAVC or as an Animal Scientist with SACNASP.
