A well-established company in Makhanda, Eastern Cape, is seeking a skilled and experienced Taxidermy Mounting Manager to lead their dynamic team. This role offers an exciting opportunity for an experienced taxidermist to showcase their leadership, technical skills, and creative artistry in managing a wide range of taxidermy projects.


Key Responsibilities

1. Production Management

  • Oversee the entire taxidermy mounting process for game heads, life-size mounts, birds, fish, and custom pieces.
  • Plan and streamline the workflow to ensure timely delivery of high-quality products.
  • Supervise the preparation, tanning, and mounting of animal specimens to ensure anatomical accuracy and aesthetic appeal.

2. Quality Control

  • Inspect completed mounts to ensure they meet the company’s high standards and client expectations.
  • Address and resolve any quality issues, including anatomical inaccuracies and surface imperfections.
  • Ensure materials and processes used align with best practices for the longevity and durability of mounts.

3. Team Leadership and Training

  • Lead, mentor, and supervise a team of taxidermists, providing guidance on advanced mounting techniques.
  • Conduct training sessions to improve the skills of team members in sculpting, painting, skin preparation, and habitat creation.
  • Foster a collaborative and positive working environment that encourages creativity and teamwork.

4. Customer Interaction

  • Liaise directly with clients to understand their specific requirements and preferences for mounting options.
  • Offer expert advice to customers on suitable mounting techniques and design choices.
  • Address client queries and ensure customer satisfaction by delivering exceptional mounts that meet or exceed expectations.

5. Habitat and Artistic Design

  • Oversee the creation of lifelike, realistic habitats that enhance the visual appeal of mounted specimens.
  • Ensure poses and positioning of mounts reflect the natural behavior and anatomy of the animals.
  • Utilize creative flair to produce naturalistic scenes using foliage, rocks, water features, and other design elements.

6. Material and Equipment Management

  • Manage inventory of taxidermy supplies, including hides, forms, paints, and other essential tools.
  • Ensure proper maintenance and calibration of equipment to facilitate efficient production.
  • Source and introduce new materials, tools, and equipment to improve quality and efficiency.

7. Compliance and Documentation

  • Ensure all projects comply with local and international wildlife laws and regulations.
  • Maintain accurate records of incoming specimens, necessary permits, and completed projects.
  • Implement proper labeling and tracking procedures for all specimens in the workshop.

8. Continuous Improvement

  • Stay updated on new techniques, tools, and industry trends to keep the company at the forefront of the industry.
  • Lead initiatives to improve the quality, efficiency, and artistic appeal of mounts.

Qualifications and Skills

Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Formal training in taxidermy or a related field is highly desirable.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 10 years of professional experience in taxidermy.
  • Proven expertise in mounting large game, small mammals, birds, and fish.
  • Previous experience in managing or supervising a team of taxidermists or workshop staff.

Skills and Competencies:

  • Mastery of core taxidermy techniques, including skinning, tanning, sculpting, and finishing.
  • Strong artistic ability and attention to detail, with a focus on realism.
  • Excellent leadership, team management, and mentoring skills.
  • Effective time management and organizational skills to manage multiple projects.
  • Knowledge of wildlife anatomy, behavior, and natural postures.
  • Competency in creating visually appealing, lifelike habitat displays.
