About the Role
The eThekwini Municipality is seeking a detail-oriented and technically skilled Quantity Surveying Technician to join the Construction Branch within the Water Operations Department. The role focuses on supporting the quantity surveying functions of the department, ensuring effective cost control, preparation of bills of quantities, and collaboration with engineers on key projects. This is a vital position for those who have strong technical acumen and thrive in a fast-paced, project-driven environment.

Job Purpose
The Quantity Surveying Technician applies quantity surveying procedures and methodologies to provide accurate project information, develop cost proposals, and support the execution of construction projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate Survey Activities: Coordinate tasks and activities related to the division’s quantity surveying functions.
  • Bill of Quantities: Prepare bills of quantities and project estimates for construction projects.
  • Audit Investigations: Conduct audit investigations to ensure the financial integrity of ongoing projects.
  • Project Collaboration: Collaborate with the Design Engineer on private development projects.
  • Material Schedules: Compile material schedules based on standard design drawings for various water components.
  • Rate Assessments: Assess and review material, plant, and labor rates using the quantity surveying computer program.
  • Project Management: Receive, record, and allocate incoming projects to ensure efficient workflow.
  • Cost Sourcing: Source costs and technical information from the fabrication workshop for specialized work on capital projects.
  • Contract Documentation: Prepare contract documentation and monitor costs and cash flow for projects.
  • Administrative Support: Attend to administrative activities to ensure smooth functioning of the division.

Reporting Line
Reports directly to the Quantity Surveyor.

Minimum Requirements
To be considered for this role, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Education: Diploma (NQF Level 6) in Building or any other related and equivalent qualification.
  • Driver’s License: Possess a valid motor vehicle driving license.
  • Experience: Minimum of 1 year of relevant experience in a related field.
  • Computer Skills: Must be computer literate.
