About the Role
The eThekwini Municipality is seeking an experienced and results-driven Chief Technologist (Civil) to lead the Construction Branch within the Water Operations Department. This key leadership role focuses on managing the division’s overall functionality and ensuring the successful delivery of civil engineering projects. The ideal candidate will have strong technical expertise, leadership capabilities, and a passion for service delivery.
Job Purpose
The Chief Technologist (Civil) is responsible for overseeing the division’s overall operations, interpreting and analyzing various aspects of civil engineering work, and providing strategic guidance to ensure effective project execution.
Key Responsibilities
- Staff Management: Lead, manage, and develop a high-performing technical team to ensure optimal use of human resources.
- Financial Oversight: Authorize and manage the division’s financial resources, ensuring accurate costing of projects and effective use of funds.
- Administration & Liaison: Undertake administrative duties and liaise with stakeholders, ensuring clear communication and operational efficiency.
- Technical Decision-Making: Make critical technical decisions and provide strategic management support to ensure smooth project execution.
- Managerial Support: Act as a deputy for the Manager: Construction during periods of absence or unavailability.
- Special Assignments: Take on related assignments as required to support the department’s goals.
Reporting Line
Reports directly to the Senior Manager (Construction).

Minimum Requirements
To be considered for this role, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Education: Bachelor of Technology or Bachelor of Engineering Technology (NQF Level 7) in Civil Engineering.
- Registration: Registered as a Professional Civil Engineering Technologist with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA).
- Experience: Minimum of 5 years of relevant post-registration experience.
- Driver’s License: Possess a valid motor vehicle driving license.
- Computer Skills: Must be computer literate.

The successful candidate will receive a competitive salary and benefits package, which includes:
- Annual Salary: R 1 061 689.00 – R 1 350 961.00 per annum
