About the Role
The eThekwini Municipality is looking for a dedicated and skilled Technician (Electronic / Electrical Engineering) to join its Water and Sanitation (Sanitation Operations) team. This role requires a hands-on approach to electronic and electrical engineering, ensuring the optimal functioning of key equipment used in water reservoirs, pump stations, and treatment works. The ideal candidate will bring a combination of technical expertise, supervisory skills, and a commitment to operational excellence.
Job Purpose
The primary objective of this position is to carry out the installation, modification, preventative maintenance, and breakdown repair of electronic and related technical equipment at water reservoirs, pump stations, and treatment works.
Key Responsibilities
- Equipment Maintenance: Ensure all electronic communication, monitoring, and control equipment are in good working order.
- Preventative Maintenance: Undertake routine and preventative maintenance to prevent equipment failure.
- Repairs: Perform electronic workshop repairs on faulty electronic equipment down to the component level.
- Installation & Commissioning: Install and commission electronic equipment as required.
- Troubleshooting: Provide on-site support to identify and resolve equipment issues.
- Supervision: Supervise subordinate staff and ensure the effective execution of assigned tasks.
- Safety Compliance: Ensure work is carried out in accordance with safety policies and procedures, maintaining a safe work environment.
- Uniforms & PPE: Ensure subordinate staff are issued with appropriate uniforms and safety clothing.
Reporting Line
Reports directly to the Senior Technician (Electrical).

Minimum Requirements
To be considered for this role, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Education: Diploma (NQF Level 6) in Electrical (Light Current) or Electronic Engineering.
- Registration: Must be registered as a Candidate Electrical or Electronic Engineering Technician with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) within 3 months of employment.
- Experience: Minimum of 1 year of relevant post-qualification experience.
- Driver’s License: Possess a valid motor vehicle driving license.
- Computer Skills: Must be computer literate.

The successful candidate will be compensated with a competitive salary, including the following benefits:
- Annual Salary: R 367 445.64 – R 476 964.12 per annum (Grade 11)

Special Conditions
- The role requires the candidate to be available for call-outs and weekend work as needed.
- Must be willing to work on a call-out roster.
- Technician and Senior Technician roles may be interchangeable within the department, as determined by the Deputy Head.
